UH Tennis Defeats Grambling, Centenary

SHEREVEPORT, La. - - The University of Houston women's tennis team continued its solid start to the season Friday as the Cougars defeated Grambling 6-0 and Centenary by a score of 5-0 at the Centenary Tennis Courts in Shreveport, La. The pair of wins improve Houston's record to 7-1 this season.
"It was nice to get a pair of wins today over a two teams we were supposed to beat," said head coach John Severance. "We have still got some work to do this weekend when we come home to play McNeese State tomorrow."
During the day's early match, the Cougars took both doubles matches from Grambling to win the doubles point, while Houston's No. 3 team won by default. In the No. 1 doubles slot, Lynley Wasson and Joanna Kacprzyk were perfect, winning 8-0 over Maia Semerdjieva and Malaina Davis. The tandem of Lucy Forward and Vicky Simpson won the second doubles match by the count of 8-2.
In the singles flight Wasson, Alix Young and Simpson did not drop a game to collect 6-0, 6-0 wins in the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles slot, respectively.
Forward got off to a quick start claiming the first set of the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, over Grambling's Semerdjieva, but had to work to close the match with a 7-5 victory in the second set. Junior Neila Starratt took the No. 2 singles slot 6-0, 6-1.
In the day's second match, UH was able to defeat a short-handed Centenary squad on their home court.
Once again the Cougars took the first two matches of the doubles competition while the third game was defaulted to UH. In the No. 1 position, Forward and Simpson were 8-1 winners while in the second slot McCombs and Young earned an 8-0 victory.
Kacprzyk defeated Centenary's Courtney Myers in the No. 1 singles slot by the count of 6-1, 6-0, while Wasson, Starratt and Young earned 6-0, 6-0 victories in the No. 2-4 singles positions.
With a pair of victories on the day, Young improved to a perfect 7-0 this season.
Houston tennis is back in action at home on John E. Hoff Courts when it hosts McNeese State 2 p.m.
