HOUSTON - Head coach Kyla Holas and the University of Houston softball program signed three players to National Letters of Intent Friday afternoon during the recent early signing period.
The group includes Kaela DeBroeck, Melissa Gregson and Mary Tyler Dobson. All three players will compete as freshman for the Cougars during the 2008 season.
"I am extremely impressed with this class," Holas said. "I think we have once again improved our program with the signing of these young ladies."
DeBroeck is a pitcher coming to Houston from Walla Walla, Washington where she attended Walla Walla High School.
"Kaela is going to be a great addition to our pitching staff," Holas said. "She has some big shoes to fill in replacing Angel and Barbie, but I could not have picked a harder working kid who is willing to face such a challenge."
Gregson, a catcher out of Rancho Cucamonga, California, is a two-time First Team All-league catcher that helped lead her team to becoming the 2006 CIF Champions. In 2006 she received the Most Improved Player Award. Gregson was the team captain as a junior and had the highest league batting average helping her earn the Best Offensive Player Award. Her travel ball team, in which she was team captain, placed 3rd at the 14-U Nationals and 9th at 16-U Nationals.
"Melissa is another big step for us into the California softball recruiting market," Holas said. "She is going to have a great career here at Houston and I look for a lot of the hitting records to be challenged once she puts on that uniform."
The final addition, infielder Dobson, is a Texas native. She is joining the Cougar family from Highlands, Texas where she attended Sterling High School.
"Mary Tyler is one of those players that can play any position and make you think she has played it all her life. I am excited about her athleticism and speed and believe she is going to play everyday in the field."
Houston begins the 2008 season playing host in a double header to the Nicholls State on February 8 followed by a February 9 double header against Mcneese State.
