HOUSTON - The No. 70 University of Houston tennis team continued its five-match homestand notching a 4-3 victory against Texas-Arlington Sunday at Hoff Courts.
The Cougars (8-2) tinkered with the doubles lineup and it paid off in a big way as UH stormed out of the gates to sweep all three contests. Houston had lost the doubles point in its last two matches.
The pairs of Loli Gomez and Brianna Bateup in addition to Sonja Nikolic and Yolandi Terblance came away with strong 8-5 victories at the top of the lineup, while Kami Miller and Vicky Simpson cruised to an 8-3 in the No. 3 slot.
"We needed this type of response in a big way after yesterday's malfunction in doubles," head coach John Severance said. "I felt there was something missing (after yesterday's match) and that we needed to mix some things up (in doubles) by pairing players that have more creative thinking on the court together."
Terblanche stretched the Houston advantage to 2-0 rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 singles victory at the No. 6 position.
Texas-Arlington trimmed the deficit to 2-1 when Klara Jagosova knocked off Brianna Bateup 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot. It was Bateup's first match of the season at No. 1 singles.
Houston regained a 3-1 lead as Miller racked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot. For Miller, it was her 15th win in her last 18 matches.
The Cougars clinched the match when Vicky Simpson came through with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 5 hole. UTA (0-6) took the last two singles matches remaining on the courts in close decisions over Loli Gomez and Sonja Nikolic. Five of the six losses for the Mavericks this season have come against Top 75 opponents.
"Today was a strong effort on everyone part," Severance said. "A couple of points here and there, this could have been a dominant win on our end or a tough loss. I give UTA a lot of credit. They are the best 0-6 team in the nation."
Houston continues its five-match homestand taking on Middle Tennessee State Wednesday. First serve against the Blue Raiders is slated for 2pm. Admission to all UH home matches are free to the public.
