HOUSTON - The No. 67 University of Houston tennis team picked up an impressive 6-1 victory over Lee College Friday at Hoff Courts.
"I'm happy to get into the double-digit win column," head coach John Severance said. "Lee College is a solid program and I give them all the credit in the world. They came out here and challenged us today. I was proud to see our girls win the points when it counted the most."
The Cougars (10-2) improve to 4-0 on its five-match homestand and have won the doubles point in 10 of 12 matches this season.
The pairs of Sonja Nikolic and Yolandi Terblanche along with Vicky Simpson and Kami Miller stormed to 8-2 wins. Simpson and Miller were down an early break at 2-1 and reeled off seven consecutive games to put Houston ahead 1-0.
Loli Gomez and Brianna Bateup notched a hard-fought win at No. 1 doubles. Up 5-4, the pair turned back a pair of break points on Gomez's serve and never looked back en route to an 8-4 win.
In singles action, Miller rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 3 hole, while Simpson cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
D'Ondra McGee clinched the match for UH scoring a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the bottom of the lineup picking up her second Division I career singles victory.
"I tell the girls outside of the top six all the time that when you get your opportunity to go out there and make the most of it," Severance said. "I was very proud that D'ondra was able to take advantage today."
Gomez racked up a 6-0, 6-3 win in the No. 2 slot. The Spainard was taking off her former team where she was named National Junior College Player of the Year a season ago.
The only setback came at top of the lineup where Bateup dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision.
"At the number one slot you never get a break," Severance said. "You have to be on your game to beat that type of player and Brianna was misfiring a little bit."
Down 5-2 in the first set, Nikolic charged back winning 11 of the last 13 games of the match notching a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5.
"Sonja needed that win today in the biggest way possible," Severance said. "She's lost some really tight matches over the last couple of weeks, and I was happy to see one go her way."
Houston concludes its five-match homestand against Columbia University. First serve against the Lions is Sunday at noon. Fans can watch all of the action for free at Hoff Courts.
