BATON ROUGE, La. - The No. 70 University of Houston tennis team lost 7-0 against No. 46 LSU Wednesday at W.T. Dub Robinson Stadium in Baton Rouge.
"It was a mind-boggling performance," head coach John Severance said. "We came into the match well-rested and had a good warm-up. Everything looked to our advantage, and we played our worst tennis of the season."
The Cougars (6-2) opened the match dropping the doubles point for the first time in eight dual matches this season.
In singles action, LSU (7-1) extended its advantage to 2-0 as Mykala Hedberg knocked off Loli Gomez 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 slot.
The Tigers went up 3-0 as Camila Caliari defeated Sonja Nikolic 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot and clinched the match at No. 6 as Daysi Espinal beat Vicky Simpson 6-2, 6-1.
The closest match of the afternoon came in the No. 3 hole but Kami Miller lost a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 decision to Anastasiya Dubova.
"Tennis is a goofy sport sometimes because you don't control the way you play," Severance said. We're not making any excuses and we hope to rebound this weekend."
The Cougars open a five-match homestand against Texas State on Saturday afternoon before squaring off Sunday morning with Texas-Arlington. First serve against Texas State is slated for noon, while the Cougars and Mavericks hook up at 11am.
"We're excited to return home, and we're not going to take these two opponents lightly this weekend," Severance said. "Texas State has a deeper team than in years past, while Texas-Arlington is very dangerous frontrunner in the Southland Conference."
