Tennis Rolls Past Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Houston tennis team flew past Southern Miss 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Terry Willis Courts at Tatum Park in a Conference USA match.
It was the first time since the 2000 C-USA Tournament that the two conference rivals hooked up on the tennis court.
"Southern Miss is a gamely conference foe," head coach John Severance said. "I'm excited to get a conference win especially one on the road. It's always tough to pick up victories on the road."
The Cougars (3-0, 1-0 C-USA) came out firing on all cylinders claiming the doubles point. Brianna Bateup and Vicky Simpson were the first to come off the courts with an 8-2 victory. Houston clinched the doubles point when reigning C-USA Co-Player of the Week Loli Gomez and Sonja Nikolic registered an 8-4 win.
In singles action, Houston went up 2-0 as Nikolic continued her solid play rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Natalia Parrado.
Miller stretched the Houston advantage to 3-0 with her ninth win in her last 10 matches. The Arizona native is now four wins shy of moving into the No. 8 position in the Cougar record books for career victories.
Southern Miss trimmed the deficit to 3-1 after the No. 1 singles match. Sherry Price defeated Gomez 6-3, 6-4, but the Golden Eagle success was short-lived.
Bateup sealed the win for the Cougars clinching the match with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory over Grace Kammerer.
Yolandi Terblance and Simpson added to the victory with straight set wins at the bottom of the line-up for UH.
"This match is a good win for us and gets our feet wet on the road," Severance said. "Tomorrow is a huge match for us with a lot of opportunity with us."
