HOUSTON - Hosting the first home doubleheader of the season, the University of Houston softball team dropped a pair of games to the No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies on Thursday night at the Cougar Softball Field.
With the loss, Houston falls to 13-12 on the season while the Aggies improve to 23-2. Of the 12 losses on the Cougars' schedule, seven have come at the hands of teams ranked in the Top 12.
For the first time since last season's 14-0 loss to Southern Miss, Houston went down in run-rule fashion as Houston fell 10-2 (6) in Game 1, and battled its way to a 10-6 loss in Game 2.
In Game 1 of the twin bill, A&M had a no-hitter going until senior Jenilee Skender fired a singled into left field in the fifth, and freshman Dru Daniels followed that up later with a two RBI double.
Down 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Skender singled into left field, and fellow senior Kim Nesloney was walked on the next at-bat. With junior Jaci Gonzalez pinch running for Skender, freshman Dru Daniels doubled to right center, clearing the bases scoring Houston's only two runs of the game.
The sixth saw the Aggies bring in two more runs before closing out the first game in the bottom of the inning with a 10-2 score.
Game 2 began much like the first game, Houston fell behind 5-0 early but this time battled back to with in three at 7-4 in the fourth.
With Nesloney on second in the fourth inning and two outs showing on the board, Glowacz reached first on an Aggie error, which also allowed Nesloney to score from second.
The Aggies walked the next batter, Skender, senior Michelle Keith followed up with a single to load the bases, and junior Brandi Clark drove in Glowacz with a single to left field.
Houston allowed two more runs in the top of the fourth to trail 7-2, but freshman Angel Shamblin blasted the second home run of her career that drove in Nesloney who had reached base on a walk.
The Cougars continued to fight their way back into the game in the next inning after holding A&M scoreless in the top of the fifth. Houston plated two more runs with a two-run bomb off of Keith's bat to bring the Cougars within one at 7-6.
However, the Cougars were unable to pull off the comeback and the Aggies slipped away with a 10-6 victory.
The Cougars will host Arkansas Pine Bluff on Monday beginning at 1 p.m. with the second game scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
