HOUSTON - Houston came away with back-to-back victories in the opening day of the Marriott Hobby Airport Invitational at the Cougar Softball Field on Friday afternoon, including the third no-hitter in Cougar history.
Houston's freshman pitcher Barbie Love and sophomore Carla Kennimer picked up their first victories of the season as Love earned the 6-3 win over Buffalo and Kennimer recorded her first career no-hitter and third in Houston history with a 5-0 win over Northern Illinois.
In other action, Buffalo defeated Central Connecticut 3-1 in the opening game of the Invitational and Northern Illinois defeated Buffalo 7-3.
Against the Buffalo Bulls, Love went the distance striking out seven batters, and allowing three runs on seven hits.
In the top of the second with one out, junior Brandi Clark recorded the first hit and first run of the game with a solo homerun over the centerfield wall.
Clark's homerun got the Cougars going in the ballgame. In the third inning with freshman Dru Daniels on first after hitting a single to left field, senior Kristen Glowacz blasted a triple into the left-center gap that scored Daniels and placed Glowacz safely at third.
With two outs, the Bulls walked senior Jeanie Davis. With Davis and Glowacz on first and third, the two attempted a double steal that scored Glowacz and put Davis out to end the inning with Houston leading 3-0.
In the fifth inning, Glowacz successfully stole second base and set a new Cougar career record for most stolen bases. The third baseman has now stolen 30 bases in her career.
Love managed to hold Buffalo scoreless through the first four inning of action before the Bulls managed to plate one runner in the fifth.
Responding to the Bulls' run, sophomore Jamie Adams came to the plate and drilled her first career home run and second hit of 2005, to bring in senior Michelle Keith who had reached second on a double.
Despite the Buffalo's late attempt in the seventh, Houston held out for the win to give Love her first victory as a Cougar in a 6-3 win.
It was in the next game against the Huskies that history was made when the Cougars turned a double play to end the game and secured the third ever no-hitter for Houston.
Kennimer logged a complete game with two walks, three strikeouts and no hits or runs allowed.
Defensively the Cougars were smothering. At first base, Keith posted a season-high 11 putouts for the team and Daniels pulled in seven assists.
Houston put five runs on the board in the first two innings and didn't look back, pulling off the second shutout victory of the year in 5-0 fashion.
Day 2 of the Marriott Hobby Airport Invitational begins Saturday at 11 a.m. with Buffalo and Northern Illinois, followed by Central Connecticut and Buffalo at 1 p.m., Houston and NIU at 3 p.m. and capping off with Houston and Central Connecticut at 5 p.m.
