The second day of the Crowne Plaza Classic concluded Friday night with Houston dropping a pair of games on the evening, while three different teams cruised to 10-run games.
In the morning games, No. 11 Baylor blew by Texas State 16-2, then followed that up with a 0-7 win over Minnesota. In the afternoon game, Texas State used an 11-run inning to zip past Kentucky 12-3, and Kentucky then fell 10-2 to North Carolina before the Gophers and Cougars took the field.
Playing in the final two games of the day, Houston dropped its first game 4-1 to Minnesota and then fell/won the nightcap with the Tarheels, 2-1.
Hitting in the leadoff position to begin the game against Minnesota, Nesloney blasted a solo homerun shot over the leftfield fence on a full-count pitch to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead after the first batter.
Through the next three innings both teams held the other scoreless until Minnesota's Megan Higginbotham tied up the ballgame with a solo shot of her own in the bottom of the fourth.
Tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, Minnesota maneuvered Melissa Murnane into scoring position at third base with a pair of sacrifice bunts. Murnane scored on the next play as the Gopher batter also safely reached first on a Houston error. That error proved to be costly we the next batter hit a two-run homer to give Minnesota a 4-1 lead that it would not let go.
Facing North Carolina in the nightcap, the Tarheels and Cougars played to a five-inning impasse before North Carolina scored on a single that brougt in Whitney Gelin from second.
The Tarheel lead didn't last as senior Kristen Glowacz led off the inning by sending a bomb over the leftfield wall to even up the score. Glowacz hit also moved her past former Cougar Arelis Ferreris for the No. 1 spot on the all-time hit list at Houston.
North Carolina took the lead back at 2-1 in the top of the seventh after the Tarheels' Julie Bove scored on a sacrifice fly to right field. The run proved to be the game winner as the Tarheels slipped away with a 2-1 win.
The third and final day of the Crowne Plaza Classic begins at 9 a.m. with Minnesota and Kentucky, followed by Baylor and North Carolina, and concluding with Houston and Texas State at 1 p.m.
