HOUSTON, Texas - Dartmouth College used a 14-8 run in the final two minutes to slip by the University of Houston women's basketball team, grabbing the 76-69 win in non-conference action Monday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars were within one at 60-59 with 4:27 left, but a 14 for 16 effort from the charity stripe for the Big Green in the final 4:07 handed UH (2-7) its third-straight loss. Dartmouth (5-1) finished the night 20 for 29 (.690) from the free-throw line.
Houston trailed 31-30 at the half and led and had a 41-38 lead with 16:29 left on the clock, but a four-minute field-goal drought allowed Dartmouth back in the game and they took the lead, 43-41, with 14:07 left. A jumper by Kadi Creel (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS) knotted it at 43 apiece with 12:30 left, but Dartmouth used an 8-3 run over the next 2:14 to take the lead for good. Creel finished the night with a season-high 14 points.
UH was playing without two starters as Emily Fryters (Adelaide, Australia/Concordia College) and Jasmin Moore (Houston, Texas/Lagham Creek HS) missed the game due to injury. Houston still mustered a season-best shooting effort from the field (29 for 71/.408) but was handcuffed by its 24 percent (6 for 25) night from behind the three-point line. UH was not able to get to the free-throw line in the first half and was 5 for 11 (.455) from the stripe for the game.
Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) tied for the game high with 20 points. She also netted the Cougars' first double-double of the season with her career-best 11 rebounds. Jackson nearly had the fourth triple-double in school history, but came up short with a career-high seven steals. She missed the last 1:43 of the game after suffering from cramps in her feet and legs. Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) finished with 14 points and Becky Gibson (Macon, Ga./Westside HS/Coffeyville CC) added 10.
The game was slow to get started with UH striking first on a fast-break layup by Jackson in the game's third minute. UH moved out to a 5-0 advantage on the next possession on a three by Creel. Dartmouth was on the board moments later, pulling to within 5-2 after coming up empty on its first six possessions.
UH kept the advantage at four, leading 11-7 with 13:25 left in the opener. The Big Green ran off a 10-4 run to lead 17-15 with 10:07 left. The visitors moved out to a six-point margin, their biggest lead of the half at 9:17, with the tally at 21-15.
UH took the lead back at 22-21 with 7:29 left, following a 7-0 run of its own. The teams traded buckets over the next two minutes and the game was knotted at 26 apiece with 5:15 left. UH had a quick 4-0 run but Dartmouth equaled it to tie it for the fifth time in the half, 30-30 with just over a minute left. The Big Green took the lead at 31-30 after Krista Perry split a pair of free throws with two seconds on the clock.
Dartmouth was led by Jeannie Cullen who finished the night with 20 points, pacing three others in double figures. Houston native Sydney Scott (Westside HS) tallied 17 points, Ashley Taylor had 16 and Fatima Kamara added 10. Krista Perry had a team-high 10 boards.
UH continues its season-long five-game homestand against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday in Hofheinz Pavilion. The Lady Panthers (1-6) are coached by former Houston Comets legend Cynthia Cooper-Dyke. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
The UH athletics marketing office is sponsoring a special promotion that gives fans $2 off a general admission ticket if they bring two stuffed animals to the box office at Hofheinz. The `Teddy Bear Toss' will benefit the Little Coogs program, a community outreach program through local charities that brings area youths to the game at no charge.
