HOUSTON, Texas - A short-handed University of Houston women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by knocking off Prairie View A&M, 78-67, in non-conference action at Hofheinz Pavilion Tuesday.
The Cougars (3-7) had only six student-athletes available for the game as Emily Fryters (Adelaide, Australia/Concordia College) and Jasmin Moore (Houston, Texas/Lagham Creek HS) both missed their second-straight game due to injury. Becky Gibson (Macon, Ga./Westside HS/Coffeyville CC) missed the game due to a high fever as the strain of playing three games in four days started to show for Houston.
UH's 78 points was a season best, as was the team's 41.1 percent shooting clip (30 for 73) and 63 team rebounds. The Lady Panthers (1-7) dropped their seventh-straight game and trailed from the opening tip, never getting within five points of UH following the opening five minutes of the game.
Houston built a seven-point halftime lead into double digits, as the home team was up 13, 53-40, with 14:30 left in the half. The Cougars moved it out to 17 with a 7-3 run that ended at the 8:50 mark with UH up 60-43. UH led by as many as 21, but 27 turnovers allowed the Lady Panthers to creep within 11 in the games waning minutes.
The Cougars were led by an unlikely duo as Kadi Creel (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS) and Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) each poured in a career-best 20 points. Creel also had a career-high 11 rebounds to close out her first double-double.
Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) added her second-straight double-double as the sophomore transfer finished with 11 points and a career-high 12 assists. Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC) pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds. Meyers single-game best ranks tied for fourth in school history and is the third-best mark in Conference USA this season.
Sha'Quaylon McKinney (Dallas, Texas/Skyline HS/Trinity Valley CC) pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds while Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) added 13 points.
UH moved out to a 7-1 lead in the first four minutes of the game as Prairie View did not make a field goal until the 15:56 mark. A 12-3 run put the margin at 13, 19-6, with 11:19 to go. The Lady Panthers used a 9-0 run to pull within five, 19-14, with 7:50 left in the half. The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes with the visitors whittling the lead down to three, 24-21 with 4:24 to go in the opening stanza.
An 8-0 run by the Cougars, keyed by jumpers from Meyers and Glover, had the lead back to double digits with 2:19 to go in the half, UH leading by 11, 32-21. The Lady Panthers, who took 14 of their 22 foul shots in the first half, used the charity stripe to bring the lead down to single digits at the half, with UH up 37-30.
Fouls became an issue for the depleted UH bench as Creel, Hawkins and Jackson each played most of the second half with four fouls. The Cougars were unable to put the game away due to 18 first-half turnovers. The Lady Panthers converted those turnovers into 15 points, enabling them to hang in there despite a 23.8 percent shooting performance in the half (10 for 42). Prairie View was led by Tanesha Barefield who had 11 points and Twila Stokes who finished with 15 rebounds.
Houston is off for 10 days over the holidays, giving the Cougars some much-needed time to rest before taking on former C-USA foe Charlotte to close out the non-conference season on Dec. 30. The game is slotted for a 7 p.m. CST tipoff at Hofheinz Pavilion.
