Jessica Brown netted the first of her two goals with a shot high over the head of goalkeeper Katie Cook within the first two minutes of play and led UNLV to a 3-0 victory over the University of Houston Cougars on Friday night (Sept. 10) at Robertson Stadium.
Brown, who led the Rebels with five shots, including four on-goal and two goals, recorded her second goal at the 12:20 mark when she sailed a kick into the right-side corner past a diving Cook.
UNLV notched its third and final goal at 38:28 by Lori Sakai, who came into the game just minutes before taking the shot.
Houston continued to battle throughout the second half with seven shots on-goal, all saved by UNLV goalie Jenna Huff, who finished the night with eight saves.
Nicole Oliver came in to guard the net for Houston in the second half and recorded seven saves.
Senior midfielder Nikki Hawkins, playing with a brace on her right knee, led Houston with three shots for the match, including two on-goal. She nearly netted her third goal of the season late in the second half before it was blocked by a Rebel defender.
With the loss, Houston falls to 0-5-0 on the year. They next travel to Huntsville, Texas, to take on Sam Houston State on Sunday, Sept. 12, with kick-off at 1:00pm. They return home to Robertson Stadium next weekend and host TSU on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7:00pm and Prairie View A&M on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1:00pm.
