Senior midfielder and Conference USA All-Conference candidate Nikki Hawkins scored all three goals for the University of Houston as the Cougars edged Sam Houston State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 12) at Pritchett Field in Huntsville, Texas.
Hawkins "hat trick" came with goals in the sixth, 26th, and 28th minutes of the first half. She has tallied each of Houston's five goals this season, and continues to build upon her all-time career statistics.
After Hawkins' first goal, the Bearkats scored on a penalty kick by Toffie Chavez in the 14th minute to tie the match and followed a minute later to take the lead a right-footed blast by Mary MacGregor off a pass from Chavez in the 15th minute.
Hawkins then went on notch her last two goals in less than two minutes to put Houston ahead, 3-2. In the second half, the Cougar defense stiffled the Bearkats offense to hold on for their first victory of the 2004 season.
The game was marred by 10 yellow cards, with six going to Sam Houston State and four to Houston.
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Oliver recorded her first victory in the net while recording two saves. Hawkins led Houston with a career-high eight shots in the game, followed by sophomore forward Nicole Zygmontowicz with a career-high four. Overall on the day, the Cougars outshot the Bearkats, 1-6.
The win halts the Cougars' five-game losing streak and improves their season record to 1-5-0. Houston returns home to Robertson Stadium and hosts Texas Southern at 7:00pm on Friday, Sept. 17, and Prairie View A&M at 1:00pm on Sunday, Sept. 19.
