The University of Houston women's soccer team kicked off the 2003 campaign on Friday (Aug. 29) night, falling by a final of 2-0 to the North Texas Mean Green in the Baylor Labor Day Classic in Waco.
The Mean Green got all the offense they needed in the first half with goals from senior forward Marilyn Marin and junior forward Melinda Pina.
Despite outshooting the Mean Green the entire game, 16-11, including 9-4 in the second half, Houston failed to score. Junior midfielder Nikki Hawkins led the Cougars with five shots on the night.
Just five minutes into the game, Pina started the scoring off for North Texas, slipping behind the defense on the right side from 10 yards out and beating Erin Ferguson, the Cougars' sophomore goalie. Then, Marin, who led the nation in goals last season, notched her first of the year on a free kick at the 21- minute mark of the first half.
The Mean Green defense took over from there, shutting down the Cougar offense en route to collecting the shutout.
Houston continues its play in the Baylor Classic against Eastern Washington on Sunday, August 31, at 4:30 p.m.
