Houston holds off late Arizona State surge for 3-2 road win in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. — The University of Houston Soccer team capped off its weekend in Arizona with a 3-2 win over Arizona State at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Despite conceding a goal in the second minute, the Cougars (8-3-3, 4-2 Big 12) countered with a goal a minute later as sophomore Samira Minor found senior Jocelyn Chinea for the equalizer in the third minute.

In the 25th minute, Arizona State (7-4-3, 2-3-1 Big 12) committed a foul in the box and senior Adelhia Ghonda put the penalty kick away to gain the lead.

Senior Ava Shannon scored the Cougars' third goal of the afternoon in the 31st minute when she sank a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Sun Devils stepped to the spot in the 83rd minute after a Houston handball was called in the penalty area. Kierra Blundell converted the chance to make it a one-score game.

The win gives Houston 12 conference points which is the most points the Cougars have ever recorded as a member of the Big 12.
