Cougars score a goal against ranked teams in back-to-back games for first time since 2021

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The University of Houston soccer team finished a 1-1 draw against #23 Memphis at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer/Track & Field Complex on Thursday evening.

Memphis (2-2-1) got on the board first with a goal by Ellis Kelly in the 10th minute.

Houston (2-1-3) countered in the 19th minute when senior Adelhia Ghonda broke up a pass in the Cougars' attacking third which led to a 1-on-1 finish past the goalkeeper.

The goal marked the first time since 2021 that the Cougars have scored a goal in back-to-back games against ranked foes.

Junior goalkeeper Sierra McCluer was the star of the evening, logging nine saves on the night, one off her career high.

The Cougars return home for a pair of matches to wrap up the non conference slate when they host Sam Houston at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Carl Lewis International Complex. Fans can purchase tickets to the match here.
