Mountaineers take series with rubber match win
Connor Udland (2-3) took the loss for Houston (17-21, 4-14 Big 12) after giving up two runs in 1.0 innings on the mound. Chansen Cole (6-1) secured the win, tossing 5.0 innings for West Virginia (27-9, 12-6 Big 12).
West Virginia snagged the early lead as a run scored on a double steal in the bottom of the first. The Mountaineers went on to score another in the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead through seven innings.
Houston got on the board in the eighth. After loading the bases with a double and pair of walks, redshirt sophomore Xavier Perez forced a Mountaineer error to plate a pair while senior Cade Climie used a sacrifice fly to drive home junior Tre Broussard, making the score 7-3. Pitchers dueled for the remainder, securing the win for West Virginia.
UP NEXT
Houston is back in its home city but away from Schroeder Park as it takes on Rice at Reckling Park. The Cougars won the first meeting, 13-1, in eight innings on March 10 and would claim its fifth consecutive Silver Gloves Series win with a victory.
