Cougars Hit Three Homers on Saturday

Broussard, Winfield and Jackson all hit home runs in middle game of series
LAWRENCE, Kansas – Junior Tre Broussard continued a hot streak at the plate with three extra-base hits as Houston Baseball fell to Kansas in a 9-8 heartbreaker on Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Tyler Bryan (1-2) gave up the walk-off single to take the loss on the mound for Houston (12-10, 1-4 Big 12). Kannon Carr (2-0) picked up the win despite allowing two runs on two hits in his 1.0 inning on the mound for Kansas (14-8, 3-2 Big 12).Â

Kansas struck first with a solo homer in the bottom of the opening frame, but Houston tied it as Broussard doubled home Helton in the third.Â

The Jayhawks reclaimed the lead with a three-run homer from Tyson Owens in the fourth, his first of two on the day. The Cougars answered quickly with four runs in the fifth to earn their first lead of the game. Redshirt sophomore Xavier Perez started the scoring with a single that also forced an error to drive home two before junior Riley Jackson crushed a two-run homer to left to put Houston up 5-4.Â

Junior Easton Winfield extended Houston's lead with his first homer of the season in the eighth, but Kansas fought back in the bottom of the frame. Owens hit his second homer of the game, a grand slam that put the Jayhawks up 8-6 going into the final inning.

Broussard came through for the Cougars in the team's final at-bat, hitting a two-run homer that evened the score at 8-8. In the bottom of the ninth, Owens claimed the 9-8 win for Kansas with a walk-off single to clinch the series for the Jayhawks.Â
