Houston defeats ranked opponent for the first time since 2021
HOUSTON — The University of Houston soccer team knocked off #15 Kansas 2-0 in its home finale on Friday night at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
Houston (11-3-4, 7-2-1 Big 12) defeated a ranked team for the first time since 2021 when they knocked off #23 Memphis. This is the highest ranked win since defeating #15 SMU also in 2021.
Seven conference wins are the most for Houston since the 1999 season when they tallied nine in Conference USA.
The first half was all Kansas (12-4-2, 6-2-2 Big 12), as the Jayhawks threatened a goal with five corner kicks. However, Houston's defense allowed just three shots.
Houston came out much more aggressive in the second half as junior Skylar Miller's cross found fifth year Ella Morgan on the half volley in the 46th minute to put the Cougars up 1-0.
The Cougars kept the pressure up and forced a turnover in their own half, and senior Ava Shannon carried the ball up to 25 yards from goal where she fired a rocket into the bottom left corner to put the Cougars up 2-0 in the 79th minute.
UP NEXT
The Cougars close the regular season in Waco, Texas, where they face #8 Baylor at Betty Lou Mays Field at 7pm Thursday.
