Perez’s four-hit day lifts Cougars over Islanders
Â
Perez drove in a team-high three runs in his 4-for-4 night with two doubles and a home run and reached base five times.
Â
The first baseman capped the Cougars (16-12) scoring with his seventh home run of the season but was the third Cougar to homer in the game after sophomore Riley Jackson and senior Malachi Lott hit back-to-back 400+ foot home runs in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Tre Broussard showed off the wheels, stealing a team-best three bases in the win. Broussard's three stolen bases in a game marked the first time a Cougar had swiped 3+ bases since Harold Coll on March 3 vs. Louisiana at Minute Maid Park (now Daikin Park). The Houston, native has not been caught stealing this year and is one of four nationally with 20+ stolen bases without being caught. Broussard's 20 consecutive stolen bases is the longest streak since 2008 when Ryan Lormand stole 21 bases consecutively. Broussard is chasing Shaun Skrehot's school record 24 consecutive stolen bases.Â
Â
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (10-21) led 1-0 after two two-out base hits drove in the Islanders' lone run of the game.
Â
Houston then rattled off nine unanswered runs by scoring in the first, fourth, sixth and eighth innings.
Â
Junior Chris Scinta (3-1) faced just three batters in the fourth inning to be given the win after the Cougars took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. The lefty set down the Islanders in order to face the minimum on just seven pitches.
Â
Senior Graysen Drezek struck out the side in the seventh inning for his first scoreless outing since March 8 against Grambling.
Â
