Lugo Sparks Series Clinching Win

HOUSTON – The Houston Baseball team trailed twice but two three-run innings propelled the Cougars to a series clinching 8-7 win on Sunday against Minnesota at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.

Minnesota (1-2) scored first for the second game in the series, but a three-run bottom half gave Houston (2-1) its first lead when second baseman Aaron Lugo drove in his first two of three RBIs.

Lugo tripled in the fifth inning to give the Cougars a 5-3 lead. The Parral, Mexico, native scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to catcher Riley Jackson.

Defensive replacement Jake Tatom swung at the first pitch that he saw in the seventh, a hard ground ball through the left side, to tie the game at 6-6 in the seventh before Lugo scored on the bases loaded walk.

Houston's pitching staff struck out 16 Golden Gophers with six of Houston's seven pitchers striking out at least one hitter.

Senior left-hander Antoine Jean (1-0) entered in the seventh with one out and struck out both batters he faced in his second relief appearance of the weekend to earn the win.

Sophomore right-hander Richie Roman (1) earned his first-career save striking out four across 2.0 innings of relief work.

NEXT UP
Houston goes on the road for a five-game road trip to the greater Austin, Texas, area and Berkeley, Calif. The Cougars will play Texas in Austin on Tuesday before playing Oregon State in Round Rock, Texas on Wednesday and then at Cal in Berkeley Friday-Sunday.

Houston's game at Texas will air on SEC Network+, the game against Oregon State will be on peak.events and the series at Cal will be on ESPN+.
