Women’s Basketball Falls to New Mexico

Junior guard Kierra Merchant scores in double-figures on Saturday
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team fell 63-41 against New Mexico in its final road non-conference game at The Pit on Saturday evening.
The Cougars (5-5) were led by junior guard Kierra Merchant with 10 points paired with six rebounds on the night, marking her fourth outing of the season in double figures. The Lobos (8-3) had four scorers in double figures. Jessie Joaquim recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams exchanged buckets early as New Mexico led 7-5 at the first media timeout. The Lobos later produced an 8-0 run to create some distance, leading 18-8 before two 3-pointers ended the first quarter in New Mexico's favor, 21-11.
Houston came out firing to start the second, outscoring the Lobos 9-2 over 6:24 to cut the deficit to three at 23-20 heading into the media break. New Mexico found a pair of scores late in the quarter as it held on to a 27-21 lead at the half.
Following a Cougar score to open the second half, the Lobos sparked a 9-0 run to extend the lead back to double digits at 36-23, nearing the midway point in the period. Trailing by as many as 14, Houston weathered the storm with a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to nine. New Mexico continued to score and closed out the quarter leading 47-32.
The Lobos outscored the Cougars 16-9 in the fourth quarter to secure the win and extend their winning streak against Houston to 6-0 at The Pit.

Houston returns to the Fertitta Center for its annual Education Day game at 11 a.m., Tuesday, to close out its non-conference schedule against Montana.
