Jones’ Game Winner Lifts Women's Basketball to Victory at UTRGV

Cougars earn first road victory since 2023-24 season
EDINBURG, Texas – Freshman forward Jade Jones delivered a clutch game-winner to lift the University of Houston Women's Basketball team to its first road victory of the season, sealing a 65-63 win against UTRGV on Thursday night at UTRGV Fieldhouse.
In the final play of the game, Houston (3-2) inbounded the ball and put the ball in Jones' hands to deliver the game-winning basket over UTRGV (3-2). Thursday's victory marked Houston's first road win since it defeated Oklahoma State, 65-57, on Feb. 17, 2024, in Stillwater, Okla.
Jones made her first collegiate start, leading the Cougars with 18 points and eight rebounds. Redshirt senior guard Kyndall Hunter and graduate guard Briana Peguero followed with 12 points each.
Houston got off to a strong start in the first quarter with Hunter and Peguero scoring seven points each to give the Cougars a 22-15 advantage.
The Cougars continued to control the pace of the game in the second quarter as they led by as many as 17. UTRGV knocked down a 3-pointer with 40 seconds to cut the deficit down to 14, but Houston entered the locker room with a 44-30 lead.
The Vaqueros came out strong in the third, cutting the Cougars' lead down to nine on three separate occasions. Houston held its ground and ended the quarter ahead, 56-47.
UTRGV came storming back in the fourth, cutting Houston's lead and tying the game twice at 56 and 63. Sophomore guard Shun'teria Anumele and freshman Kayla King kept the Cougars ahead, but it was Jones who delivered the decisive layup as time expired to secure the victory.

Houston returns to the Fertitta Center for its Hoopsgiving game against High Point at 2 p.m., Sunday.
