Houston caps inaugural Big 12 Conference season
Â
Senior outfielder Tre Jones opened the festivities by playing the national anthem on his electric guitar before his start as the right fielder.
Â
The 13 seniors include Tre Jones, Alex Lopez, Cary Arbolida, Harold Coll, Brendan O'Donnell, Jonathan French, Chris Stuart, Anthony Tulimero, Owen Woodward, Justin Murray, Kyle LaCalameto, Duncan Howard, and José Torrealba.
Â
GAME 1:
#19 Oklahoma State (36-16, 19-9 Big 12) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third inning thanks in part to a lead-off home run, a couple hits, a couple of ground outs and a wild pitch. The Cowboys won the first game 20-3.
Â
Houston (26-28, 7-21 Big 12) got a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the third inning on designated hitter Alex Lopez's second home run of the season. Lopez's two-run home run marked his first long ball since Opening Weekend on February 18, the third game of the season.
Â
The Cowboys plated 10 runs in the sixth inning, all with two outs, to a 17-2 lead.
Â
Frist baseman Justin Murray laced an RBI single in the eighth.
Â
In relief, senior southpaw Brendan O'Donnell tied his career-high with five strikeouts over a season-high 2.1 innings.
Â
GAME 2:
The Cowboys scored first in the second game as well, plating a pair in the first inning on a couple hits.
Â
Oklahoma State doubled their lead in the third inning on a two-run blast by Nolan Schubart.
Â
Third baseman Anthony Tulimero plated Houston's first run of the game. Tulimero's single ended the string of three-straight hits that resulted in the first Cougar run.
Â
Houston's defense turned a season-high three double plays.
Â
Coll led off the ninth inning with his 20th double of the season. Coll became the first Cougar with 20 doubles in a season since Jake Stewart in 2008.
Â
In his final appearance for the Cougars, Murray pitched the first two outs of the ninth inning, striking out both hitters he faced before an emotional exit to the dugout with fellow senior Anthony Tulimero.
