Cougars plate three in first, trio homer in narrow loss to nation’s best
Â
Houston (20-20) pounced on the Aggies in the first inning, scoring the first run of the game after three-straight singles. Third baseman Anthony Tulimero's RBI single gave Houston the lead and then a ground out extended the lead to 2-0 before a double steal brought home Tulimero for the third run of the game.
Â
Texas A&M (35-5) put a five spot on the board in the second inning on just two hits. The Aggies took advantage of three walks, two wild pitches and a Cougar error.
Â
An Aggie home run in the third inning extended the lead to 8-3. The hosts scored in six consecutive innings.
Â
Left fielder Ace Reese drove his sixth home run of the season to left field and off the scoreboard to cut the deficit to four runs marking Reese's first opposite field home run this season.
Â
Reese picked up his third hit in the sixth inning, his first first-career three-hit game, on a left-on-left single to left field.
Â
The freshman's bat brought in two more runs in the seventh inning, although he did not get credit for two RBI as the runs came on an errant throw that went into Houston's dugout.
Â
Houston's five runs in the eighth inning came off a pair of home runs. The first dinger of the inning came off the bat of pinch hitter Anthony Avalos, who smacked his first career hit over the wall in left field. Three hitters later, second baseman Harold Coll obliterated a three-run home run off the left field scoreboard to pull within two runs.
