Cougars Conclude Season at Big 12 Championship

Houston falls to #18 (3) Oklahoma in first round of Big 12 Championship
STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Houston Tennis program concluded action at the 2024 Big 12 Championship as it fell in the first round to #18 (3) Oklahoma, 4-0, at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Wednesday.
DOUBLES
Oklahoma (17-5, 11-2 Big 12) got out to a fast start as Julia Garcia and Zdena Safarova defeated senior Laura Slisane and junior Maria Dzemeshkevich, 6-0.
The Cougars (2-19, 0-13 Big 12) responded as sophomore duo, Sonya Kovalenko and Sophie Schouten took down #20 Dana Guzman and Roisin Gilheany, 6-2. This marked the pair's eighth doubles win of the season.
After being down 5-1, senior Blanca Cortijo Parreno and junior Elena Trencheva fought back to tie the match at five. Alina Shcherbinina and Chloe Noel took the final two points to claim the doubles point for the Sooners.
SINGLES
On court three, Schouten scored the first point in the first set, but Shcherbinina took control, taking the match, 6-1, 6-2.
After dropping the first set, 6-1, Trencheva got out to a 4-3 second-set lead before Noel took the final three points to put the Sooners within one of clinching the match.
Oklahoma took the final point of the day on court six, when Emma Staker defeated sophomore Gabriela Cortes, 6-1, 6-2.
