Houston ties game in seventh, lets game slip in final inning
HOUSTON – The Houston baseball team dropped a closely contested game to Texas on Saturday night 6-5 after giving up a ninth inning home run to Texas' Dee Kennedy – his second of the game – at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.
Texas (21-15, 8-6 Big 12) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a bloop single to center field and then scored two more in the third to make it 3-0.
A pair of singles off the bat of third baseman Anthony Tulimero and left fielder Ace Reese in the Houston's (17-17, 5-12 Big 12) half of the third inning tied the game at 3-3.
Texas retook the lead in the fifth inning on a pair of solo home runs before the Cougars answered with two of their own solo shots in the seventh inning. Shortstop Coby DeJesus hit his first-career home run to cut the deficit to one run and then Tulimero hit his third dinger in as many games to tie the game at 5-5.
A night after striking out 16, Houston pitchers struck out 13+ Longhorns thanks in part to sophomore Ryan Dollar's career-high five strikeouts in a career-best 3.0 innings.
UP NEXT
Houston will look to take the series in Sunday's rubber match beginning at 1 p.m. at Schroeder Park. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
