Lefty strikes out 11 Bears batters, first Cougar since 2021 with 10+ strikeouts
Jean (2-1) struck out a career-high 11 batters while tossing a season-high 94 pitches against a season-high 23 batters over 5.1 innings of scoreless work. The final seven outs that the lefty starter retired were all the strikeout variety, striking out the side in the fourth and fifth innings. The senior struck out multiple batters in three different innings.
Jean gave way with one out in the sixth for right hander Paul Schmitz who induced a pop out and then got a strikeout to strand a pair. Schmitz then set down the Bears (4-10, 0-2 Big 12) in order in the seventh for his second-straight scoreless outing.
Freshman Alex Solis was spectacular in the eighth and ninth innings for Houston (10-4, 2-0 Big 12). The right hander struck out three as the Cougars trio of arms struck out 15 – a Baylor season-high in strikeouts – for their second shutout of the season. The 15-strikeout performance by Houston pitchers marks the third time in the last four games Houston has struck out 15+ and the fifth time this year.
The Cougars scored in four different innings, including posting crooked numbers in the fourth and seventh. Houston struck in the first inning after designated hitter Kenneth Jimenez was hit by a pitch and RBI-machine first baseman Justin Murray doubled off the right-center field gap scoring Jimenez – his first of two doubles in a three-hit performance.
A sacrifice fly in the third inning with the bases loaded off the bat of right fielder Tre Jones padded the lead.
In his first start for Houston, center fielder Jacob Schoenvogel belted a fastball to right field for his first home run as a Cougar, scoring left fielder Ace Reese.
The second home run of the game came off the bat of catcher Jonathan French in the seventh inning – a four run inning for Houston. French led off the inning with an opposite field home run off the right field score board before a pair of free passes set up Murray for his second RBI of the night. With two outs and the bases loaded, second baseman Harold Coll drove in pair on a single to right field.
