Jelkin two-hits TCU with seven strikeouts, Cougars’ mistakes gift Horned Frogs sweep
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Houston baseball team gifted TCU four runs in the seventh inning after the Cougars led 4-2 through six, falling 6-4 to the Horned Frogs on Saturday even though the pitching staff allowed just two hits.
TCU (20-7, 5-7 Big 12) scored first for the third straight day scoring in the second inning on a sacrifice fly and in the third inning on a ground out. The Horned Frogs did not score a single run on a base hit RBI.
Houston (15-12, 4-8 Big 12) scored three runs in the fifth inning after right fielder Jonathan French doubled in designated hitter Tre Jones. Two batters later, center fielder Jacob Schoenvogel singled in two runs to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. A fielder's choice and an error plated Houston's fourth run of the game in the sixth inning.
The hosts plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of two Houston errors.
The Cougars starting pitcher, Jaxon Jelkin (0-0), twirled a career-best 6.1 innings on a career-high 109 pitches, striking out seven batters and only allowing the two TCU hits. Jelkin still has made seven starts and has not earned a win or handed a loss while leading the team with 46 strikeouts.
