Cougar pitchers hold Rice to one hit through eight innings in 4-1 win
HOUSTON – The Houston baseball team took game one of the Silver Glove Series against Rice on Tuesday night, 4-1 from Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.
Right hander Cade Citelli (1-0) was brilliant on the mound spinning 4.0 innings of one-hit work while striking out seven – one shy of his career high. Citelli more than doubled his innings pitched total for the season, now throwing 7.2 total innings.
In relief, left hander Chris Stuart tied his career-high with 4.0 innings out of the pen. Stuart struck out five Owls (8-12) and gave up just one run and one hit.
For the ninth, first baseman Justin Murray took the hill and struck out a pair while facing the minimum for his second save of the season.
In total, Houston's pitchers struck out 14 Owl hitters, the 11th time this season striking out 10+ batters.
The Cougars (13-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. A pair of one-out singles by second baseman Harold Coll and right fielder Tre Jones and a walk to catcher Jonathan French loaded the bases for shortstop Jake Rainess' infield single.
The next batter, center fielder Jacob Schoenvogel continued his hot hitting streak with a triple to right field, driving in two more runs.
Houston tacked on a fourth run in the seventh inning when designated hitter Kenneth Jimenez doubled into the left field corner to score French.
UP NEXT
Houston will head to Reckling Park for the second game of the series on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
