Coll’s Five RBI Day Not Enough

Second baseman homers, doubles, drives in five in series finale
PROVO, Utah – The Houston baseball team brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but fell in the rubber match to BYU on Saturday, 10-8, snapping a 12-series winning streak dating back to March 2023.
Center fielder Jacob Schoenvogel lined a pitch into the left-center gap with two outs in the ninth inning to drive in a run and bring the tying run to the plate, but Houston (12-6, 4-2 Big 12) was unable to tie the game.
Second baseman Harold Coll finished the game with career-high five RBI thanks to a two-run home run and three-run double.
Houston jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the top of the third inning. A two-run home run off the bat of catcher Jonathan French in the second inning opened the scoring before Coll snuck one out of the ballpark off the top of the center field wall for another two-run home run in the third.
BYU (9-8, 3-3 Big 12) hung a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the third inning, capitalizing on a pair of home runs and a Houston fielding error that extended the inning.
The hosts pushed the go-ahead run across in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly.
Houston wasted a glorious opportunity to tie the game in the fifth inning on a lead-off triple by left fielder Ace Reese, his team-leading third of the season, but the visitors were unable to convert.
The visitors then had a pair of singles to lead off the seventh inning after Reese and Coll recorded their second hits of the game. A sacrifice bunt by right fielder Tre Jones moved Reese and Coll into scoring position but a comebacker to the pitcher off the bat of French wasn't enough to score Reese and then left a pair in scoring position on a called strike three with two outs.
BYU had the bases loaded after a lead-off single and back-to-back hit batters in the seventh inning and capitalized with a two-run single to make it 7-4 with no outs. A sacrifice fly made it 8-4, BYU.
Just like in the ninth inning on Friday night, Houston loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning, but this time Coll came through in the clutch with a two-out bases clearing double to left-center field to pull within a run, 8-7.
BYU plated a pair in the bottom half to make it 10-7.

Houston will open the Silver Glove Series against Rice on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. from Don Sanders Field at Schroeder Park before going to Rice for the second game of the series on Wednesday. The game at home will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with the game at Rice being streamed on ESPN+.
