Houston Drops First Big 12 Game

Jelkin’s 13 strikeouts not enough in pitcher’s duel
PROVO, Utah – Houston had the bases loaded down a pair of runs with two outs in the ninth inning but was unable to tie the game as Houston dropped game two of its first Big 12 Conference road series 4-2 on Friday.
BYU (8-8, 2-3 Big 12) scored in the first inning for the second straight game – just the third time a Houston opponent has scored in the first inning – utilizing a lead-off single, a hit by pitch and a two-out single to plate the first run.
Houston (12-5, 4-1 Big 12) scored the tying run in the fifth inning after a pair of doubles from second baseman Harold Coll and catcher Jonathan French.
Right hander Jaxon Jelkin, who struck out 13 BYU hitters – the most by a Houston pitcher since Antoine Jeans' 11 strikeouts a week ago on March 9 – did not earn a decision after 6.0 innings of four hit, 13 strikeout work – both career bests.
BYU scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a one-out solo home run and then four straight hits to score two more runs.
In the top of the ninth inning, freshman Conner Bennett recorded his first collegiate base hit. A walk to designated hitter Kenneth Jimenez put a pair on for left fielder Ace Reese who singled up the middle, scoring Bennett. An intentional walk to shortstop Jake Rainess loaded the bases with two outs but Houston was unable to capitalize.

Houston and BYU will face off in the rubber match of the series on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT from Miller Park. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
