
Cougars Drop Big Easy Classic Opener Against rv Minnesota

Women’s basketball continues action at 3:30 p.m., Saturday vs. Pacific
NEW ORLEANS – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team dropped its opening game of the Big Easy Classic - Bayou Tournament, 61-44, against rv Minnesota inside Alario Center on Friday afternoon.
Houston (2-5) will close out tournament action against Pacific at 3:30 p.m., Saturday and Minnesota (8-0) faces Louisiana. Fans can click here to purchase tickets or catch all the action by clicking here.
Graduate guard Laila Blair and sophomore guard Summer Bostock led the Cougars with 10 points each, marking the fifth-straight game with at least two Cougars scoring in double figures.
Houston kept it close in the opening frame to only trail by three at the end of the quarter. The Cougars recorded three of its seven triples, including two by Blair, to reach 200 career made 3-pointers. The Houston native is now one of three Cougars to achieve the feat, joining Brittney Scotts' 226 (2007-11) and former teammate, Britney Onyeje with 212 (2020-24).
Minnesota's Grace Grocholski initiated a 14-2 run in the second quarter, scoring 10 of her 18 points against Houston. The Cougars were limited to six points in the period.
The Golden Gophers carried over their scoring streak in the second half with a quick 11-0 run to lead, 43-19. Fifth-year forward Peyton McFarland started a 6-0 run alongside Bostock's four points.
Both teams entered a shooting slump after a quick 5-0 Minnesota run in the final frame. Redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke's three-point play ended the drought for the Cougars and ignited an 8-0 run. Houston held Minnesota to its fewest points in any quarter this season with nine points in the fourth quarter.
