PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Prepared for Big Easy Classic

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Houston women's basketball program heads to New Orleans to compete in the Big Easy Classic with two matchups against rv Minnesota at 1:15 p.m., Friday and Pacific at 3:30 p.m., Saturday inside Alario Center. Both games will be streamed on YouTube and fans can listen to all the action by clicking here.

THE GAME VS. rv MINNESOTA

Houston and Minnesota meet for the first time in program history.
Head Coaches Ronald Hughey and Dawn Plitzuweit meet for the second time in their careers.
The Cougars faced Plitzuweit during her time in South Dakota with a 65-58 victory for the Coyotes in the First Round of the WNIT (March 15, 2018).
Minnesota reached the 2023-24 WNIT final, falling 50-69 to Saint Louis (April 6, 2024).

THE GAME VS. PACIFIC

Houston and Pacific meet for the second time in program history.
The Cougars picked up the lone victory over the Tigers, 83-74, at the Adidas Invitational in Irvine, Calif., (Dec. 19, 1982).
Pacific finished the 2023-24 campaign with a 19-15 record and reached the Second Round of the WNIT, where it fell 62-77 to Minnesota (March 26, 2024).

LAST TIME OUT

Houston closed out its November homestand as it fell, 69-53 to North Texas on Sunday afternoon inside Fertitta Center.
The Cougars had two players score in double digits as graduate guard Eylia Love led the offense with 19 points, followed by graduate guard Laila Blair's 18 points.

THE TIP

Houston returns All-Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention selection Laila Blair for the 2024-25 season.
Blair (1,646) is 23 points away from taking sole possession of fifth place on Houston's all-time scoring list.
Blair is two 3-pointers away from reaching 200 made 3-pointers in her career.
The Cougars return five players from the 2023-24 roster: Kierra Merchant, Gigi Cooke, Laila Blair, Avalon Miller and Peyton McFarland.
Houston welcomes transfers Leilani Augmon (Troy), Summer Bostock (Maryland), Ashley Chevalier (Texas Tech) and Eylia Love (Louisville) to the squad this season.
Redshirt senior forward Avalon Miller (Achilles) and senior guards Maliyah Johnson (ACL) and Kateri Poole (ACL) will miss the season after suffering season-ending injuries.
Assistant Coach Chynna Grimes will miss the first two months of the season after the arrival of her daughter, Capri, on Nov. 4.
Love recorded the Cougars' first double-double of the season and the third of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds vs. Alcorn State (Nov. 21).
Houston had six players score in double figures vs. Alcorn State: Merchant (13), Love (10), Bostock (11), McFarland (10), Cooke (10) and Blair (10).
