
Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against Pacific

Gigi Cooke leads Cougars with 15 point scoring effort
NEW ORLEANS – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team saw its comeback effort fall short against Pacific, 64-60, in the Big Easy Classic – Bayou Tournament inside Alario Center on Saturday evening.
Houston (2-6) had three players score in double-figures as redshirt sophomore Gigi Cooke recorded 15 points, followed by redshirt senior forward Leilani Augmon with 13 and graduate guard Laila Blair with 11 points. Pacific (4-4) was led by Elizabeth Elliot's career-high 26 points.
The game's opening minutes were close, but Elliot initiated a 6-0 run to give Pacific a lead it would never relinquish. Two treys for Pacific put them up by seven, but a 5-0 Houston trimmed the deficit by two. The Tigers knocked down a 3-pointer to end the quarter with a 21-16 advantage.
Houston trailed by as many as 11 points in the second frame, but a 10-0 run put the Cougars within two. Pacific answered with two consecutive jumpers, followed by a free throw from Blair to enter the locker room with a five-point lead.
The third quarter was low-scoring as Pacific outscored Houston 9-7. The Tigers ended the third frame with a 47-39 lead.
After trailing by as many as eight points in the final quarter, graduate guard Ashley Chevalier knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to put Houston within one. Pacific to a trip to the charity stripe as Liz Ashley missed the second and fifth-year forward Peyton McFarland grabbed the defense rebound.
With 19 seconds remaining, Chevalier attempted the final shot, but the ball bounced off the rim. A foul sent Pacific back to the free-throw line, knocking down both shots to secure its first victory over Houston.

Houston remains on the road as it heads to Arlington, Texas, to face UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday inside College Park Center.
The Cougars return to Fertitta Center to close out non-conference action against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m., for 713/Coogs Give Back Day and Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. for Education Day.
