HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team closed out its November homestand as it fell, 69-53, to North Texas on Sunday afternoon inside Fertitta Center.
Houston (2-4) had two players score in double digits as graduate guard Eylia Love led the offense with 19 points, followed by graduate guard Laila Blair's 18 points.
North Texas (5-1) opened the game on a 9-0 run before redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke's jumper lifted the lid off the basket for Houston. The Mean Green outscored the Cougars 12-6 in the first quarter.
After North Texas opened the second stanza with a 10-0 surge, Houston responded with five-straight points. Following the media timeout, the Cougars opened an 8-0 run, with six-straight points from Blair and a layup by Love to get within seven.
The Mean Green's Desiree Wooten scored 10 points in the frame to lead North Texas into the locker room with a 29-21 advantage. Love had six of her 18 points in the second quarter.
Like the start of the first two quarters, the Mean Green opened the second half on a 10-1 run. Blair and Love combined for 18 of Houston's 23 points in the third frame with 10 and eight points, respectively, but the Cougars trailed 53-44 heading into the final period.
A layup by Cooke and a 3-pointer from Love cut the deficit to four points, but a 14-2 North Texas run put the game out of reach as the Cougars fell 69-53.
