
Cougars Sweep Pirates, Earn 5th-Straight Win

Straight sets victory gives team 10th sweep of the season
HOUSTON − The Houston volleyball team picked up its fifth straight victory after a dominant performance against East Carolina earning the team its 10th sweep of the season on Friday (25-20, 25-14, 25-21).
The Cougars (22-5, 12-3 AAC) put on a commanding display in both aspects of the game, as they recorded 54 kills, 46 assists and 58 digs in the match. The individual team leaders on the day included junior Abbie Jackson with 17 kills, sophomore setter Annie Cooke with 38 assists and sophomore libero Kate Georgiades with 21 digs.
A solid start in the first set for both teams saw the Cougars jump out to an early 10-5 lead at the first timeout. ECU responded with a 10-3 run to regain the lead at 15-13 and forced a UH timeout. The Cougars sparked momentum once again and rode a 12-5 run to close and win the first set 25-20 led by Jackson's six kills, Cooke's 14 assists and a team .463 kill percentage.
The second set picked up an even start between both teams at 7-7 before the Cougars went on a dominant 13-4 run to extend the lead to 20-11. The Cougars closed out the set shortly after with a score of 25-14 to go up two sets to none. A .417 kill percentage carved the way for the Cougars in the second set as Jackson posted seven kills while Georgiades recorded eight digs.
The opening of the third once again saw both teams battle and exchange points for an early 6-6 scoreline. UH opened up the set with a 9-4 run to lead 15-10. The Pirates fought back to stay alive in the match, but the Cougars were too much to handle as they closed out the third set 25-21 to complete the sweep.
The five players with 10+ attack attempts in the match finished with a .350 kill percentage or higher led by junior middle blocker Rachel Tullos (.571) and followed by Jackson (.472), senior outside hitter Kennedy Warren (.367), senior middle blocker Isabel Theut (.357) and junior outside hitter Celeste Darling (.353).
