Cougars Sweep Huskies to End Houston Invitational Unbeaten

Houston uses dominant defensive showing to sweep Houston Christian in the final match of the Houston Invitational
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team finished its Houston Invitational unbeaten, sweeping the Huskies limiting them to a .022 hitting percentage.
A team effort on the defensive side of the ball saw the Cougars out-dig and out-block the Huskies 44-37 and 8-3 in a quick three set match at the Fertitta Center, Friday night. Â
Junior Sydney Jones led the Cougars in the first set tallying six digs hitting .455 in a 25-16 set win for Houston. A competitive start to the set found the score square at ten. The Huskies would keep the set close until a 4-0 run placed the Cougars into a 21-15 lead. Houston would close the set claiming four of the next five points.Â
Houston kept its foot on the gas in the second set, winning 25-12 behind four team blocks and a balanced attack featuring 14 kills. The Cougars crept into an early lead, claiming the first four points. Following a Huskies point, the Cougars scored four unanswered points, extending the lead to 9-1. The Cougars would not relinquish the lead, taking a two-set advantage in the match.Â
The Cougars rallied behind six aces, holding the Huskies to under ten points in a controlling 25-9 set win. Â
Houston extended an early 6-4 lead by registering six unanswered points, jumping to a 12-4 lead. After lengthening the advantage to 19-9, another 6-0 run ended the set with sophomore Gillian Pitts notching her third ace of the match.Â
