Houston welcomes Tulane, Temple for weekday matches; host student, Halloween promotions
HOUSTON – Coming off another 1-1 weekend split, this time on the road against Cincinnati and East Carolina, the University of Houston volleyball team returns to the Fertitta Center to host Tulane and Temple in weekday matchups on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. CST and the Owls on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m., respectively.
Junior Rachel Tullos was named to American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after posting her third-consecutive weekend of 11-plus blocks. The middle blocker averaged 1.22 blocks per set on the weekend and hit .370 over the two road matches.
Houston is tied for second in the conference with Cincinnati and Wichita State, all three hold 7-3 AAC records.
The Cougars own the all-time series record against the Green Wave, 36-15 and won the first meeting of the season back on Sept. 29 in New Orleans, 3-1. UH also took down Temple in Philadelphia, 3-0 back on Oct. 3. The Owls have gotten the better of the Cougars all-time however, winning 8 of the 13 total meetings.
Kate Georgiades ranks 18th nationally in digs/set (5.13) and leads the American Athletic Conference. Junior Abbie Jackson leads the AAC in aces/set (0.41) and ranks 65th nationally in the category. The Cougars also lead the conference in aces/set (1.84) and in opponent attacking percentage (.178).
Houston was picked No. 2 in the American Athletic Conference Coaches Preseason Poll. It was the second straight season in which the Cougars were picked among the Top-Two leaders and the highest preseason ranking since the 2006 Cougars were picked No. 2 in Conference USA Preseason Poll.
Under the leadership of third-year Head Coach David Rehr, the Cougars have produced eight All-American Conference student-athletes to go with a Freshman and Setter of the Year. That is more All-Conference honorees than any other school during the last two years.
Cincinnati head coach spent two seasons at UH, winning 38 matches from 2010-11.
