Jackson leads team with 18 kills in 4-set victory
HOUSTON − Coming off a loss last week, Houston bounced back into the win column after taking down Tulane in four sets on Wednesday (25-22, 25-14, 18-25, 25-13).
Coming off a near-career day last week against East Carolina, junior Abbie Jackson led Houston with 18 kills out of the team's 57 total, while sophomore Annie Cooke led the team with 41 assists. The Cougars finished the match with 56 digs, courtesy of sophomore Kate Georgiades' 17.
Senior Kennedy Warren posted the second-most kills on the night with nine while also contributing defensively with 12 digs.
The first set was tight from the start as both teams went back-and-forth with four lead changes, as Houston mustered the largest lead of the set by five. The Cougars posted 16 kills with a .275 attacking percentage in the first set as Cooke assisted on 12 of UH's points. Despite a late push by the Green Wave to even the set at 22, the Cougars managed to pull away and take a 25-23 first set victory.
Houston had a much stronger showing in the second set led by a .367 attack percentage. Drawn 8-8 at the start of the set, the Cougars rode a 10-3 run to distance themselves from the Green Wave before closing it out 25-14.
The Cougars kept the start of the third set close before falling behind on a Tulane 9-3 run and eventually conceding the set 14-25. Tulane powered through with a .441 attacking percentage and 17 kills to cut the set deficit to one.
At the start of the fourth set, Houston jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead as they dominated on the attack. Tulane struggled to get anything going offensively in the fourth as the Cougars held the Green Wave to a .175 attack percentage and limited their opportunities to get back in the game. Finishing the set on a 13-6 run, the Cougars ended the set with a .351 attacking percentage to close out the Green Wave.
Jackson's 18 kills on the night leave her three kills shy of reaching 1,000 career kills for the Cougars. A milestone, heavily coveted and celebrated in the college volleyball community.
