Jackson tallies season-high 31 kills, second-highest of career in 5-set loss
GREENVILLE, N.C. – For the second-consecutive matchup between the University of Houston and East Carolina, the two teams needed five sets to decide a winner, with the Pirates prevailing 3-2 on Sunday (24-26, 17-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-9).
Junior Abbie Jackson led all scorers with a near-career day, tallying 31 kills, one off her career-best of 32. The junior posted her eighth double-double of the season and the 15th of her career thanks to 12 digs accompanying her 31 kills. Jackson received offensive support from senior Isabel Theut's 11 kills.
Defensively, Houston collected 78 digs, 23 of which came from sophomore Kate Georgiades' platform. Senior Torie Frederick pulled in 15 digs, and in her first start of 2021, Peanut Childers pulled in 13 digs and posted a double-double with 48 assists.
Childers led the offense to .205 and .262 attacking clips in the first and second sets, respectively, both sets the team won. However, the Pirates held the Cougars offense to a .125, .025 and .150 attacking percentage the final three sets en route to taking the match.
Every set was close at the start, especially the first set, which no team led by more than three points for more than one rally. Houston staved off an ECU set point at 24-23, before scoring three-straight to take the first 26-24. Jackson posted five kills in the set and junior Rachel Tullos added three of her own.
A 6-0 run midway through the second set was all the Cougars needed to run away 25-17. Jackson had eight kills in the set while Georgiades and Frederick each had two aces. Theut had four kills out of the middle in the set.
Even though UH posted more kills in the second set than ECU, 16 kills to ECU's 11, the Pirates were able to take the set. Houston, committed 10 attacking errors, thanks to 5.5 blocks by East Carolina, allowing ECU to grab the set 25-22.
The fourth set was all ECU from the start, leading 8-4 when UH called its first timeout. Houston cut it to 11-9 ECU but the Pirates held pace and scored five more points down the stretch.
In the fifth set, ECU and UH took shots back and forth, going point-for-point until 6-6. Three UH errors gave ECU a five point lead which was too much for the Cougars to overcome, falling 15-9 in the set.
