Cougars hit .315 in the match, hold Tigers to .055 attacking clip
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball program returned to action Sunday afternoon sweeping the Memphis Tigers (8-12, 1-7 American) in three sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-17).
With the win, Houston extended a six-match winning streak against Memphis. Houston won for the sixth time in its last seven matches and improved to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in American Athletic Conference play.
Led by senior Abbie Jackson's 11 kills, Houston posted 41 total kills, 13 more than Memphis. Right behind Jackson, senior Isabel Theut and senior Kennedy Warren added eight kills respectively. Sophomore Kate Georgiades led the match in digs (15) and was supported by 10 digs from Warren.
The Cougars started slow in the first set, but junior Celeste Darling quickly turned things around with four kills to build up the lead for Houston. Sophomore Annie Cooke led the way for Houston with 12 assists in the first set, and a total of 31 assists on the day.
Similar to the first set, the second was close, but the Cougars quickly turned things around, with a kill from Warren forcing the match to a 7-7 tie. Junior Rachel Tullos forced a Memphis timeout at 10-7 UH with a kill.
In the third, Houston took advantage of Memphis' errors, which gave Houston a five-point lead and forced Memphis into a timeout at 15-10 UH. Abbie Jackson had four attacks late in the third set to boost Houston's lead.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will hit the road with two consecutive contests with a match at Cincinnati on Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. CST and then at East Carolina on Oct. 24 at 12 p.m. CST.
