Five Cougars with eight-plus kills hands Bearcats 1st home loss of 2021
CINCINNATI, Ohio – For the first time in 2021, senior Kennedy Warren and junior Celeste Darling led the University of Houston volleyball team with 11 kills each as the Cougars took down Cincinnati 3-1 on Friday night (25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 25-18).
With the win, Houston (17-4, 7-2 AAC) took sole possession of second place in the American standings, with conference leader UCF visiting the state of Texas to end the season in November. For Cincinnati (11-6,6 -3 AAC), the loss marked the team's first home loss in 2021, now 4-1 in Fifth Third Arena.
All five starting attackers ended the match with at least eight kills and the team hit .243 on the night. Junior Rachel Tullos posted seven blocks, her sixth-straight match with at least five blocks. Darling added four more blocks.
Junior Abbie Jackson posted four aces in the match and collected 13 digs. Sophomore Kate Georgiades dug 15 attacks and sophomore Annie Cooke posted a double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs.
Houston won the first set in convincing fashion thanks to a 5-1 run at the end to take the first 25-20. Senior Isabel Theut led the offense in the set with three kills without an error.
The Cougars led two-thirds of the way through the second set but allowed Cincinnati to put together a 12-1 run to snag the set.
Another 25-20 set win for Houston in the third set put UH in the driver's seat thanks to three kills from Jackson, Tullos and Warren, leading the Cougars to a .353 attacking clip in the set.
UH ran away with the match and the fourth set quickly. A 9-2 run from 12-12 to 21-14 gave the Cougars breathing room down the stretch before senior Peanut Childers ended the match with a pure ace.
