
Houston Kicks Off Spring with Texas A&M, Lamar

Cougars set to open the 2019 spring slate
HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar Tennis team opens the 2019 spring season with a back-to-back weekend matchup against Texas A&M on Saturday, followed by Lamar on Sunday. First serve against the Aggies is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. On Sunday, the Cougars will face the Cardinals at the Winston Tennis Facility at 2 p.m.
The young Cougar team had a strong fall season, where five out of the six Cougars made their Houston debut, tabbing a total of 22 singles wins and nine in doubles.
Junior Phonexay Chitdara and freshman Sophie Gerits teamed up to earn a team-leading five wins in the fall. The Belgian duo was able to reach the Flight 1 final at the SMU invitational, while both earning a total of eight wins for the season in singles-play.
Ndindi Ndunda led the team in singles play, tallying a total of six victories in the fall. The sophomore reached the Flight 6 final at the Rice Invitational and went on to defeat the No. 3 seed in the ITA Texas Regional, reaching the Round of 16.
Stephanie Belovukovic and Elena Tairyan impressed at the SMU Invitational, picking up two straight wins in doubles play. There, the freshmen duo left their mark in singles-play, each reaching the finals in their respective flights.
Texas A&M has yet to drop a set in its 2019 spring season matches, beating Utah and Grand Canyon at California. Freshman Jayci Goldsmith holds a 9-2 record in singles play at Flight 1 for the Aggies. The Texas native has paired up with sophomore Tatiana Makarova to hold a 4-1 record in doubles play.
Lamar will start their spring season against Rice on Friday before facing the Cougars. The Cardinals were able to take home two singles titles that came from juniors Jasmin Buchta and Bianca Vitale.

Houston is set to continue its season hosting Sam Houston State on Friday, Jan. 25, and Incarnate Word on Sunday, Jan. 27. The Cougars will take on the Bearkats at 2 p.m. at the Winston Tennis Facility.
