HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team defeated both Sam Houston State and Incarnate Word, by scores of 6-1, in a double header on Sunday at Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
Houston dropped only two singles matches throughout the day while winning all of its doubles matches.
THE MATCH AGAINST SAM HOUSTON STATE
Starting with doubles against Sam Houston State, Lauren Alter and Alison Mills raced to a 6-1 win to start off the match in style. Their dominant serving led them to only lose one game and seal the match.
Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari followed by winning 6-3 over Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic. Both Dimitrova and Mazzari are undefeated on the season in singles and doubles play.
In the final doubles match of the morning tilt, Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou trailed 4-2 in their doubles match, when play was stopped to move on to singles.
The Cougars won all but one singles match against Sam Houston State. Mazzari led off the winning ways by posting a 6-0, 6-3 win over Khee Yen Wee. Mazzari has yet to drop a set this season in singles.
Next, Dimitrova took down Fabienne Gettwart in a 6-3, 6-1 win. Keeping her unforced errors to a minimum propelled Dimitrova to her third victory in singles play this season.
Nicolaou finished shortly after Dimitrova in a 6-1, 6-3 win. Nicolaou's victory pushed the score to 4-0 in favor of Houston and clinched the match for the Cougars.
Senior transfer Alison Mills continued her winning ways en route to picking up her third victory of the season. Mills picked up the win in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3 over Carrie Casey.
In the last match of the day against Sam Houston State, Lauren Alter pulled out a tremendous three set win. She won the first set 6-3, and after dropping the second set, came back to win 10-8 in the super-tiebreaker, making her final score 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
With the match already in hand, Ana Glumac fell to Lusine Chobanyan 6-1, 6-2 at line six, however with the overall victory Houston moved to 3-0 on the season.
THE MATCH AGAINST INCARNATE WORD
The first doubles match to be completed against Incarnate Word was by Alter and Mills, winning 6-2. The duo lost just three total games in both of their doubles matches Sunday.
Dimitrova and Mazzari cemented the doubles point for the Cougars with a closely contested 6-4 win. The Cougars did not drop a doubles match in either competition Sunday.
Doubles against Incarnate Word saw a change in the lineup for line three of doubles, with Laura Bernardos taking the place of Ana Glumac. Bernardos and Nicolaou's match was stopped at 4-5 due to the other matches being finished.
Singles played out similarly to the Sam Houston State match, with the Cougars winning five of six matches. Nicolaou started Houston off with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 performance to win her fourth match of the spring.
Bernardos took control in a 6-0, 6-3 win in her first singles match of the season. Her ability to play consistently in rallies propelled Bernardos to the first win in her spring career.
Dimitrova followed suit with a 6-4, 6-0 win to seal the overall match for the Cougars. Dimitrova used a consistent first serve throughout the match which helped her limit long rallies.
Alter won her second match of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Victoria Kareh. The sophomore remained perfect at 4-0 on the season.
In the next match, Mazzari pulled out a tough second set to win 6-0, 7-6. Mazzari has won all four of her singles matches this season in straight sets.
Finishing off the doubleheader, Mills lost in one of the closest matches the Cougars have played this season, with the final score ending 6-4, 3-6, 7-10. The super-tiebreak was tied at 5-5 before Sara Djurdjevic pulled away for the win.
