HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team returned home, but moved indoors to the Galleria Tennis & Athletic Club to defeat Lamar 4-2, on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sunday's match began with singles play, and the Cougars were forced to start with a forfeit at the No. 6 position due to an injury to freshman Tsveta Dimitrova.
Houston wasted no time in evening the match, picking up its first win of the day from freshman Lauren Alter at the No. 2 singles position. With the score 5-3 in the first set, Alter broke serve to take a 1-0 lead in the match over Anna Spengler, before returning to win set two 6-2. The win for Alter was her eighth this season.
The Cougars gained the lead for the first time shortly after with a victory at the No. 5 singles position for junior Ana Glumac. Glumac cruised to a 6-2 win in the first set over Talisa Merchiers, before answering with another 6-2 win in the second set to clinch the match. Glumac picked up her fifth win in singles play.
Houston extended its advantage to 3-1 at the No. 4 singles position with a straight-set victory from freshman Constandena Nicolaou. Sanja Jolic battled to tie the first set 3-3, however Nicolaou took the next three games to win set one 6-3. Nicolaou raced out to a 5-3 lead in the second set, eventually breaking serve to win the match 6-3, 6-3. The victory for Nicolaou was her seventh singles win of the spring.
The Cardinals cut the lead to 3-2 with a victory for Katya Lapayeva over junior Sveva Mazzari at the No. 1 singles position. Set one played back-and-forth with Lapayeva edging Mazzari 7-5, before coming back to win the second set 6-3.
The Cougars clinched the overall match on Court 3, where freshman Cristina Rovira was able to grind out her contest against Jasmin Buchta in straight sets. Set one went down to the wire with Rovira topping Buchta 7-5. Set two played just as close, and Rovira eventually broke serve up 5-4 to claim the match 7-5, 6-4.
