HOUSTON â€" Graduating senior Maria Cardenas completed her career on the court for the Houston Cougar Tennis Team last season, but she was not done there, as the Caracas, Venezuela native will graduate Suma Cum Laude from the University of Houston.
Completing her final semester, Cardenas worked hard and passed all nine hours with flying colors, finishing the grading period with a 4.0 grade point average. Earlier this week, Cardenas was named to The American All-Academic team, and she will finish her academic career with a 3.90 cumulative GPA, enough to earn highest academic honors. Cardenas was twice named as an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2014 and 2015 and was also a member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team during the 2014-15 season.
Cardenas joined the Cougars from Auburn prior to her sophomore season, and collected a 42-34 record in her time at Houston and won a career-best 22 matches in 2013-14. Cardenas helped lead the Cougars to back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in 2013 and 2014 as well as consecutive appearances in The American Championship title match.
Cardenas played an integral role in helping the 2014-15 Cougars win a program-record 18 consecutive matches, compiling a 7-4 singles record over that span, while winning five out of six doubles matches with partner Tina Rupert.
