Lantrip, Hernandez Selected in MLB Draft

HOUSTON â€" Houston Baseball juniors Andrew Lantrip (Cleveland) and Nick Hernandez (Houston) became two more Cougars in program history to be drafted by a respective MLB team as the duo went in the 8th Round on Day 2 of the 2016 MLB First Year Player Draft.
Lantrip, a Livingston, Texas native, and right-handed pitcher for the Cougars, was the first Cougar to be selected this year as he went in the 8th Round at No. 242 by the Cleveland Indians.
Hernandez, a Missouri City, Texas native, a Cougar closer, went just five spots after Lantrip at No. 247 in Round 8 by the local team in the Houston Astros.
2016 marks the 15th straight year a Cougar has been selected during the MLB Draft and Lantrip and Hernandez mark the fifth and sixth Cougars to go among the Top 10 rounds under head coach Todd Whitting at Houston.
Houston has now had 37 players in program history drafted in the Top 10 rounds and now total 146 all-time since 1968.
Saturday will mark the final day of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft as Rounds 11-40 will be announced, beginning at 11 a.m. CT. For full MLB Draft coverage, CLICK HERE.

Made 15 appearances with 14 starts as Houston's Friday starter…Finished with a 6-6 record and a 2.60 ERA with two complete games and one complete game shutout.Totaled 90.0 innings…Struck out 84…Led the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio, finishing with just five walks…Tossed his complete game shutout in a win over Grand Canyon (March 19) with seven strikeouts…Fanned a season-high 13 hitters in an 8.0 inning win over Alabama (March 11) en route to being named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball…Was part of a combined shutout in the season opener vs. Villanova (Feb. 19)…Went 11 games without issuing a walk and struck out a batter in every appearance.
SOPHOMORE (2015)
Named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region and American Athletic Conference Second Team...Led conference in innings pitched at 113.1 and in strikeouts with 115...115 strikeouts ranks seventh all-time in a single-season at UH...Went 9-3 with a 2.62 ERA in 16 starts...Tossed three complete games and one combined shutout...Had six games with at least 10 strikeouts...Fanned a career-high 13 in 8.1 inning gem at USF (April 24)...Lasted at least 5.0 innings in 15 of his 16 starts...Allowed just one run through his first 19.2 innings pitched on the year...Won his first and last three starts...Fanned 12 in 7.2 innings vs. Buffalo (March 13)...Allowed a combined two runs in back-to-back starts vs. Cincinnati (April 18) and at USF (April 24), while striking out 23...Finished the year with double-digit strikeouts in five of his last seven starts...Threw complete games vs. HBU in the NCAA Regional (May 29), at Memphis (April 2) and vs. LSU (March 6)...Is now 15-3 in his two-year career... Named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year...Enjoyed one of the best freshman pitching campaigns in program history, bolstering a 6-0 record and a 1.87 ERA in 14 appearances and six starts...Struck out 33 and walked just seven in 43.1 innings of work...Made his first collegiate start at McNeese State (April 29), earning the win in 5.1 innings...Went a season-long 7.0 innings and struck out a season-high 10 in a win over Prairie View A&M (May 6) at home...Struck out seven in 5.2 innings in a start vs. Temple (May 21) in the American Baseball Championship opener to earn himself All-Tournament honors...Pitched a season-long 4.0 shutout relief innings, allowing one hit in the win over Texas State...Earned his first collegiate win in a 3.0-inning hitless outing with two strikeouts vs. Baylor (March 11)...Later picked up wins vs. Texas State (April 8) and Sam Houston State (April 22) all out of the pen to accompany wins over McNeese State (April 29), Prairie View A&M (May 6) and Temple (May 21) as a starter...Walked just one hitter in his first 10 appearances, which totaled 28.2 innings...Didn't allow a hit in his first 4.0 innings and two outings...Helped Houston to a 48-win season, an American Conference tournament title, Regional Championship and appearance in an NCAA Super Regional for the first time since 2003.
