Baseball Falls in Championship Final

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Houston Baseball dropped the American Championship game, 7-2, to No. 3-seeded UConn on Sunday afternoon in Clearwater, Fla.
The Cougars wrap up American Championship play with a 36-23 overall record and finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, while UConn earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and moved to 37-23 on the year with the win.

Houston tallied nine hits, led by freshman Joe Davis -- who belted his team-leading 14th home run of the year to drive in one of the Cougars' two runs.
Senior Jacob Campbell went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored, while sophomore Connor Hollis added two hits in a 2-for-4 effort.
Seniors Michael Pyeatt, Josh Vidales and Justin Montemayor along with freshman Grayson Padgett all had a base hit.
A scoreless game was broken up in the third when UConn plated a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead in the top half of the inning following a two-run home run.
After a little over an hour delay due to lightning in the Clearwater area, play resumed and Houston made a pitching change to freshman Trey Cumbie (XXX), who took over for starter Andrew Lantrip.
Lantrip (3.0,4,2,2,0,2) allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work as he suffered the loss, falling to 6-6 on the year.
The Huskies used a three-hit inning and an error to score an unearned run in the fourth to make it a 3-0 game.
Houston jumped on the board in the sixth when Davis belted his third home run of the tournament and 14th of the year to straight-away centerfield for the Cougars' first run of the game. With that, Houston trimmed UConn's lead to 3-1.
The Huskies quickly responded with their fourth run of the game in the top of the seventh to bring the deficit back to three runs.
Campbell would open the bottom of the seventh with his second double of the game and come around to score on an RBI-fielder's choice from junior Jose Reyes to make it a 4-2 game.
Maxwell (2.2,2,1,1,1) worked 2.2 innings of relief work before handing the ball to junior closer Nick Hernandez in the ninth.
UConn would use four hits to score three runs to extend its lead to 7-2.
Sophomore Seth Romero (0.1,1,0,0,0,0) came in with two outs in the ninth and held UConn scoreless.
American Pitcher of the Year and UConn starter Anthony Kay (6.0,6,2,2,2,5) earned the win and improved to 9-2 on the year after allowing just two runs on six hits and two walks in 6.0 innings of work for the Huskies.
