HOUSTON - The University of Houston Men's Cross Country, Women's Golf and Tennis programs each earned the NCAA's Public Recognition Award, the NCAA announced Wednesday. The award honors programs with Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of their respective sports through the 2014-15 academic year.
The tennis program was selected for the honor for the fifth consecutive year, while the men's cross country team received the honor for the third straight year.

"Our department's mission is to build Champions for Life, and we challenge our student-athletes to pursue the highest level of achievement daily whether academically, athletically or as a member of our community," Houston Vice President for Athletics Hunter Yurachek said. "With today's NCAA Public Recognition award, our tennis, women's golf and men's cross country programs have achieved a stated annual academic goal and continue to set a standard for each of our sport programs to strive for."
Based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate, these teams have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sports. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally.
The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 944 teams.
All Division I teams' APR scores will be released April 20. All teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
